CM Jayalalithaa announces Rs 500 crore relief for rain-hit areas :
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday announced allocation of Rs 500 crore towards relief and rehabilitation.“I have allocated Rs 500 crore towards relief and rehabilitation with quick effect,” CM Jayalalitha said.According to the sources, 71 deaths have been reported across the state in the past few days.
The chief minister has been criticized by the opposition for saying “losses are unavoidable when there is very heavy rainfall.” PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss has said her statement “belittles the suffering of the common man.”
In 70 relief camps, 58,000 food packets were being distributed, she said.
About 23 To 37 centimetres of rain poured on Tamil Nadu on a single day, the Chief Minister said. The water has been pumped out from 207 of 587 flooded locations, she said.
More than 5,000 people have been evacuated from low lying areas in Chennai.The government said that it has distributed 90,000 food packets all over the areas.
9 National Disaster Response Force teams are working in Tamil Nadu, besides state teams.
Road traffic has been severely hit and schools and colleges have been ordered to remain closed till Tuesday.

Hundreds of families who are living along the Adyar river and other low-lying areas have already been evacuated from the place.
